Leg godt — "play well". This phrase is the essence and meaning of every LEGO set. But it wasn't always this way. The "grandfather" of all modern LEGO Marvel or LEGO Ninjago sets was ordinary stools, stepladders, and ironing boards, and their "godfather" was Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen.

How the "those very" LEGO pieces appeared
In fact, it wasn't Christiansen who invented the LEGO "bricks" at all, and not even at LEGO. The concept was born by Hilary Fisher Page, a child psychologist from England. They were also released by the British from Kiddicraft.
Well, what about Lego? In 1947, it had just bought equipment for making plastic and the first molds. Page's bricks became just one of 200 types of toys, plastic and wooden, that were made in Billund.
However, at LEGO they improved on Hilary's idea, removed the side slots and rounded the studs. Soon the LEGO construction set could already be bought under the name Automatic Binding Bricks.
The new "bricks" attached less firmly than in Page's system, which increased the playability of the construction set. When Ole died, the company passed to his son Godtfred. To interest a wider audience in the brick construction sets, Godtfred decided to improve his products.
After that the lock of the pieces was refined, and each element became compatible with every other element. The design was updated in 1958, and on January 28, 1958 at 13:58 the LEGO "brick" was patented. It took another five years to find the optimal plastic (cellulose acetate was replaced with ABS plastic), but the basic construction remained unchanged.
Since then and until today the brick standard has remained unchanged. As a result, the newest sets like LEGO Marvel, LEGO Avengers or LEGO Star Wars easily connect with classics like the "House with Garage" from 1958. The precision of the molds for stamping pieces is 10 microns, and of the bricks themselves — up to two thousandths of a millimeter.
