US clothing and shoe sizes

Shopping at US online stores is a pleasure and great value, but newcomers often run into an unfamiliar clothing and shoe sizing system.

On this page Prostobox provides US-to-Russian size comparison charts. Note that size charts may differ between stores. Everything on this page is for reference only. Always double-check the size chart on the site where you plan to shop.

A few tips

to help you find the right US size

Measure your waist, hips, and chest

For US clothing, you need three measurements: chest, waist, and hips. Measure yourself and your family so you can confidently buy clothing and shoes in the right size. For kids' clothing, height and weight usually do the trick.

Measure height for both kids and adults

This matters most if height falls outside the standard range.
Remember the abbreviations:
P or WP means petite women up to 160 cm
T or WT means tall women from 174 cm

From small to large

US adult clothing sizes are usually even numbers in ascending order. US size 4 is small, while size 14 is large.

Quick size estimate

To convert a women's US size to a Russian size, subtract 38. 4 US → 42 RU
To convert a men's US size to a Russian size, subtract 40. 4 US → 44 RU

The "minus one" rule

Clothing labeled with letter sizes (S, M, L) often runs a size larger than expected. If you usually wear M T-shirts, go with S at a US store.

Runs small or oversized

Check the store's size charts and reviews to see how the item fits. Keywords to look for: Fit Small, Fit Normal, and Fit Oversize.

Check what's already in your closet

You probably already own clothes with US sizes on the label. Look at the tags on clothes and shoes you have at home to see which US size matches your usual size.

Always check the store's size chart

Use the size charts published on the store's site. Different brands can deviate from standard sizing. Remember, 1 inch is 2.54 cm.

Important.

Some US clothing brands, like Hollister, use what's called a junior size line.

It's easy to spot: instead of even sizes 2, 4, 6, they use odd sizes like 1, 3, and 5.

If you wear size 8 (Russian 46), size 7 will usually fit, but it's best to check your measurements.

Junior clothing lines typically fit girls 162-172 cm tall.

These junior lines also include sizes 00 and 0 for very slim builds.

Important.

Jeans sizes usually consist of two numbers.
The first is the waist size, the second is height or inseam length.

x28 - 71 cm x30 - 76 cm x32 - 81 cm x34 - 86 cm x36 - 91 cm

For example, women's US jeans 28-34 should fit a girl 172-176 cm tall with hips around 92 cm and Russian clothing size 46.
